Tankless Water Heaters

Water Heating 101

Water heating is an essential part of day-to-day life in a home, providing hot water for everyday use and, in some cases, space heating as part of a hot-water heating system. There are many different types of water heaters and various factors in determining which water heater works best with your home.

• Tankless water heaters do not store water, but instead heat water directly. When hot water is turned on, the water travels through a pipe into the tankless water heater, where it is heated. These heaters provide a constant supply of hot water and are relatively energy efficient.

Storage water heaters are relatively inexpensive and operate as their name suggests, by storing hot water in a tank - ready for use. These water heaters tend to be less efficient than other types, due to the potential for heat and energy loss that comes with keeping a large amount of water continuously heated.

Heat pump heaters use heat in the surrounding air to heat the water inside the tank. They use electricity to transfer heat from the air to the water, meaning that the process is significantly more energy efficient than other types of water heaters.

Solar water heaters work by capturing the sun's heat through solar collectors and then using that energy to heat water stored in tanks. Solar water heaters are, on average, 50 percent more energy efficient than gas and electric water heaters.

Tankless coil and indirect water heaters take advantage of a home's heating system to heat water through a boiler or furnace. This is perhaps the least efficient option for water heaters.
